China government type may best fit current China environment building a well-off society. Non-democracy not the same as dictatorship nor absolute monarchy

Most westerners misunderstand China government type. They probably equate China, a non-democratic society, to dictatorship or absolute monarchy. This is totally wrong. The China government is doing its utmost to bring a well-off society to her people.

A well-off society means comfortable but not wealthy society. The China government has 10 clearly defined objectives to achieve:

  • GDP per capita exceeds US$3000. This is the fundamental indictor for building up a well-off society.
  • Average disposable income per capita in the urban cities exceeds RMB18000.
  • Average income per family in the sub-urban areas exceeds RMB8000.
  • Engel coefficient (proportion of income that spent on food) is below 40%.
  • Citizens in urban cities occupy a living area exceeding 30 square meters per person.
  • More than half of the country areas are urban areas.
  • Over 20% of the family own home computers.
  • Over 20% of the secondary school students can be admitted to universities.
  • Over 2.8 doctors take care of a thousand of citizens.
  • Over 95% of the people in urban cities can have safety net on basic needs.
In fact, governance of a public company can be a simplified analogy for China government type.

The above objectives are standards for China government officials to follow. This is a way of management by objectives in a company. The 9 members in the central government are just like the board of directors. Each board member has a finite term of engagement unofficially - they cannot be admitted to the central government beyond the age of 69. This ensures that there is no “old man politics” learning the lessons in “cultural revolution”.

The National People's Congress representatives are equivalent to shareholders in a public company. They are responsible for electing the central government. Although the current governance system is not perfect, this gives the most stability to China as a whole with a good check and balance avoiding dictatorship.

Unlike the ages of Mao and Deng, there is no absolute power given even to the Chairman of the nation and Prime Minister. There are ample of retired central government members in the Communists Party acting as the check and balance. The current system may be the best choice for China and her people for the time being…

Obviously, the central government members cannot be elected by her 1.3 billion people that over 60% are still farmers. A simple democracy in China means these farmers will dominate the election result. We saw that there were many so called sub-standard democratic elections held in immature countries filled with briberies, injustice and instability…

People in China have improved their living standards a lot while China economy grows. “A cat that catches mouse is a good cat”. A “democratic” government does not mean anything unless it does good to the livelihoods of her people…

The 2008 financial turmoil revealed that capitalism was far from good not to mention about perfect. The US and UK "nationalization" of the financial institutions has somewhat bankrupted the creditability of capitalism. The bailout of 3 US auto companies obviously contradicted the "survival of the fittest". Does that have any impact on your belief on capitalism? We do...
